Cake 33, 20x20cm, ink on paper, 2017
The "Cake 33" was created by the artist on his thirty-third birthday in France. The simple and clear message of this symbolic drawing is questioning the traditional celebratory manifestations through super-intellectualized conceptualization of the artistic action.
All of That, 29x41cm, india ink on paper, 2015
Made in the summer of 2015 in Bucharest, Romania, "All of That" is a work that can be viewed as a manifest for the upwards mobility of subconscious thoughts.
Playing on the duality of "Above/Below" under the influence of the work of C.G.Jung, Virtosu manages to integrate both realms into a unitary composition of chaos vs order - a duplicity of conceptualized wildernes.
A simple first glance makes visible the clear shape of a half submerged merry-go-round that contains the remains of marine and land-life in a mash-up of shapes. A wink to Banksy's "Dismaland" exhibition that was released around that same period of time.
Angels, 100x70cm, india ink on paper, 2013
Made in 2013 in the Bucharest studio of the artist, "Angels" represents an ironic view of the post-communist consumerist Romanian society. The multiple visual references assemble into a complex composition featuring prominently in the center three "angel" rats pimped-up with big golden crosses and chains around their necks. The scene is set as a baroque evocation - we can observe little Putty flying around on fluffy black clouds in the background.
A questioning of dogma and the commercialization of religious belief in Romania after in the late 2000s.
Circus Equilibrium, 29,7x42_cm, india ink on paper, 2011
Circus Equilibrium is the original sketch for the painting with the same title that is now in a private collection in Swizzerland. The work is the depiction of a recurring dream that the artist had since he was a child: the nightmarish feeling of this dream was that of carrying the entire weight of the world on his shoulders. This translated, for the young Virtosu, in a sensation of being overpowered and underwhelmed. A feeling that persisted in his subconscious memory until he created these works, in 2011. The drawing also spawned a larger painting (230x190cm) that the artist has created whilst on residency in Leipzig, Germany.
Convulsions, 29x21 cm, india ink on canvas, 2015
At first glance, this drawing seems rather chaotic and overwhelming - kind of like the artist was deliberately attempting to exhaust the viewers' attention and keep her busy with discovering what the drawing might be intended to mean.
It is this precisely this questioning that is at the core of the artists' intent through this amalgam of shapes, lines and hues of grey scattered around the page.
I'm quite simple,29x21cm, India ink on paper, 2015, private collection
Though the title might suggest a meaning already, the work itself is by no means so straight-forward. Conceived as an elaborate maze of continuously rearranging lines, this drawing lets the viewer speculate on the hidden meanings and mysterious pathways that one might find if one would just slowly go about following each line till the end.
Now in a private collection in Bucharest, Romania, this work is a prime example of the power of accumulation: playing with an element and multiplying it until it becomes overwhelmingly present.
